Instagram Unfollower Tracker on Mac: Check Without an App

See who unfollowed you on Instagram from your Mac using your own data export — no password apps, no downloads, works in Safari or Chrome.

If you are on a Mac and want to see who stopped following you on Instagram, the short answer is: you do not need to install anything. Drag your Instagram data export ZIP into hooleft.me in Safari or Chrome, and your unfollowers appear in seconds — no password, no app download, no account access granted to anyone.

This post covers the Mac-specific steps, including a couple of places where macOS handles things differently from Windows or a phone.

Why most unfollower trackers are built for phones, not Macs

The unfollower-tracker category is overwhelmingly phone-focused. Searching on a Mac usually surfaces iOS App Store listings, Play Store links, or browser extensions that only work on Windows. None of those help someone sitting at a MacBook.

The tracker that actually works well on a Mac is one that does not need to be a native app at all. The approach that is safest for your account — requesting your own Instagram data export and reading it in a browser — fits the Mac workflow naturally: download a file, drag it somewhere, done.

What will not help you on macOS: any tracker that routes through a phone-only app, iOS-exclusive App Store tools, and browser extensions that depend on a Windows-only store. Those paths simply do not exist on a Mac.

How to request your Instagram data export from a Mac

The export request can come from anywhere — your Mac browser, your iPhone, or Instagram's desktop site on any device. The ZIP file Instagram emails you is the same regardless.

If you are requesting from your Mac:

  1. Open Instagram's website in Safari or Chrome and sign in.
  2. Click your profile picture (top right), then go to Settings.
  3. Navigate to Your activity > Download your information > Download or transfer information.
  4. Choose Some of your information, then check Followers and following.
  5. Select JSON as the format — this is the format the upload expects.
  6. Leave the date range set to All time, or choose a range if you only want recent data.
  7. Click Request a download and choose to send the link to your email.

Instagram emails the link when the archive is ready. For most accounts this takes between one and four hours. Heavily-followed accounts occasionally wait longer. Once the email arrives, click the link and the file saves to your Downloads folder.

One Mac-specific thing to check: Safari auto-open

On macOS, Safari has a setting called Open safe files after downloading that is turned on by default. When it is on, Safari automatically extracts ZIP files after downloading them, which leaves you with a folder instead of a ZIP.

hooleft.me expects the original ZIP, not the extracted folder. If Safari has already extracted your file, you have two options:

  • Right-click the extracted folder in Finder and choose Compress "[folder name]". This creates a new ZIP you can upload.
  • Or, before downloading, turn off the setting: Safari > Settings > General > uncheck "Open safe files after downloading". Then re-download the file and it will arrive as a ZIP.

Chrome and Firefox do not have this auto-extract behavior, so if you prefer to skip the extra step, either of those browsers works without any configuration change.

Opening and uploading the ZIP on a Mac

If you end up with a ZIP that needs to be extracted first (for instance, to look at the files yourself), double-clicking it in Finder opens macOS's built-in Archive Utility. No third-party unarchiver is needed — the JSON files inside are plain text you can read in any text editor.

But there is no need to open the ZIP yourself before uploading it to hooleft.me. The site accepts the ZIP directly and reads the follower and following lists inside your browser — nothing is sent to a server.

To upload: open hooleft.me in any Mac browser, then drag the ZIP file from a Finder window onto the upload area. You can also click the upload area to open a standard macOS file picker and navigate to the file from there. Either way works.

If the ZIP looks unexpectedly small (under 20 KB for an account with many followers), the export may be incomplete. The post on an empty or missing followers file covers the common causes — the most frequent one is opening the HTML version of the archive instead of the JSON version.

What you see after uploading

hooleft.me compares your followers list against your following list and surfaces the gap: accounts you follow that do not follow back, and accounts that were in a previous upload but are gone from this one.

The free tier shows the first three results without requiring an account or card. That is enough to confirm the approach works. Seeing the full list, and comparing two exports from different dates to see who left between them, is part of the Pro plan.

Mac vs other approaches: a comparison

MethodNeeds Instagram passwordRisk to accountWorks on MacCost
Password-based unfollower appYesHigh — credentials sharedSome iOS apps only$5–$15/month

The manual JSON route does work on a Mac if you open two export files in a text editor and compare them. For a small account with under a few hundred followers, it is doable in half an hour. For larger accounts the manual approach becomes its own project. hooleft.me does the comparison for you.
